Jada Pinkett Smith just revealed a shocking truth about her and Will Smith's marriage: the two are no longer together. While promoting her memoir upcoming memoir Worthy (available on Oct. 17), Jada sat down with Hoda Kotb for a candid interview during which she revealed that she and Will have been separated and have lived "completely separate lives" since 2016.

During an excerpt from the interview (which airs on Oct. 13), she said the two are not legally divorced, but broken up. The reason they kept this information hidden from the public was because they were just not "ready yet" and were "still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in partnership. In regards to, how do we present that to people? We hadn't figured that out."

During a separate part of the clip, Kotb asked Jada what led to the end of their romantic relationship, to which she responded, “Why it fractured ... that’s a lot of things...By the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying. I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be."
And although Pinkett Smith admits that she has considered a legal divorce, she hasn't been able to go through with it. “I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce," she said. "We will work through ... whatever. I just haven’t been able to break that promise."
The pair's relationship has long been surrounded by controversy and headline-making news, from the "entanglement" (Jada's relationship with singer August Alsina) to the infamous Oscars slap. The two have addressed their relationship difficulties in the past, but this is the first time either of them has opened up about the separation.
